OK! So that’s the intro, and a bit about travel and tides, all done with…or so I thought. Having taken a more considered look at Sefton Council’s website I decided the travel information was, well, a bit basic. So, what else do you need to know? Let’s suppose that you are travelling to see the Iron Men for the first time and thought you might take a look at Google Maps first. Don’t bother searching for ‘Another Place’ – you may get quite frustrated! If you are travelling by car you really want to know where the car parks are. And since the Iron Men cover about two miles, or 3.5 kms, of the seafront you need to know that there are actually three main parking areas. The most northerly you can find on Google Maps by searching for HM Coastguard Crosby (if you are not a car driver Merseyrail’s Hall Road Station is only a few hundred yards away from here). The most Southerly car park (and the closest to the docks that you can see in the distance in our header picture) you will find by searching for Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre – and again, this is not too far from Merseyrail’s South Road Station (where there is also a convenient bus interchange). But the most central car park is right opposite the Crosby Leisure Centre which also is not too far from Merseyrail’s Crosby and Blundellsands Station. In fact, if you are reliant on public transport, it has to be said that your journey to see the Iron Men need not involve too much walking.
So, just to give a flavour of what to expect, here’s a picture of…some sand dunes!
The picture actually features the Crosby Leisure Centre car park and is a little deceptive ‘cos parking for visitors to the beach is towards the back of the picture just opposite the Leisure Centre. And although it’s only a few yards from the promenade a large amount of blown sand on the pathways can often make things more difficult for disabled people.
Now all that’s needed are two more pictures with a bit more chat about the Coastguard Station and the Lakeside Adventure Centre car parking situation and then we can move on to the next topic, which will be…well, here are a couple more of the Iron Men to be going on with.
